The Fall of InfoSpace Chat.

Most of what you are about to read has only been discovered recently, and the reason why I did not bring this earlier is simply because I didn’t know anyone would be particularly interested.

From the beginning.

You will all remember the infamous ‘pedo-flooder’ the blighted the lobby for over two years and the never ending battle to stamp it out and hunt down the perpetrator. I finally caught up with him and found not only had he a fetish of children, he WORKED with children, he operated a business hiring out childrens bouncy castles in the M.aidstone area of Kent England.

Many thought the person responsible for downing InfoSpace chat was Graham and Missy who later went on to build their own short-lived chat. I can confirm neither of them were responsible. The pedo flooder was also called - by coincidence - Graham, and used aliases such as Phloody (using in HTML characters) and PKChatDaemon among others, and is thought to have been befriended by Ki Ok. (not known if Ki Ok was aware of his true intentions).

Other harmless lobby flodders were also identified, but none of them used paedophile connotations. Although one did have a fetish for defecating or at least simulating it. (I’m not naming names here) but was pally with TAIPEI.

When I caught up with Graham, I telephoned him out of the blue, identified who I was and made it very clear I knew who he was - and what he had done. I then challenged him with the facts and asked two simple questions, How did you do it? And why did you do it?

It was clear he had no cares for anyone using InfoSpace or the survival of the chat itself, he wanted it destroyed with a bang. At first seemed more interested in how I had located him, and how I was able to persuade his ISP to provide me his name and address. This conversation took place on April 12th 2001 about 3 months after Info closed its chatrooms, and prior to my findings many believed the pedo flooder had been someone called Chris from Hove England due to his psychopathic tendencies.

Graham was much more calculating, he admitted among other things, using iconic words in his lobby flooding under the belief that this would cause the chat to slow, or even crash. He later opened up and we had a lengthy conversation, and told me that Infospace administrator cserve (McKenzie??) had one day appeared on the chat and he approached her and asked for Moderator access, the conversation focused on that she (cserve) was due to leave soon anyway and she apparently granted Graham Superuser access there and then, (I don’t know how true this is BTW). It is quite possible he guessed a Superuser’s password and got in that way, we all remember Cyndi from T.exas sitting there all day trying password permutations and amassed a huge collection of names.

Superuser access allowed a person to use the /grantpriv/ command to give moderator commands such as /grantbasic/ , /banposter/ and /showpriv/ etc to users making them moderators.

He also experimented with the /showuser/ command which could retrieve a users password and address (if they entered it correctly on the signup page) and he would often login to a moderators name and read their private messages. His favourite targets were Eyetalker, HeavyFuel and KrAyZiE, I never found out why he took a specific dislike to them, it could be he picked on them because they frequented the lobby.

Another experiment he played out was the use of /grantall/ where he granted every user the command /chroom/ and this allowed everyone to create their own rooms. He also went on to give his friends moderator access and the /banposter/ and /banquietly/ commands to anyone he saw fit and for his more closer friends he would give the /superuser/ command. He also mentioned about playing with /grantall/ and gave out the /subject/ command to everybody and later removing it again.

He held vendettas against me (and several others too)  and would give access and instruct his friends to ban any of my names on sight, he knew I was close to catching up with him, and finally I planted a sleeper in the lobby and waited until he took the bait. He banned it straight away and I managed to get his Blueyonder IP address and went straight to Telewest in S.urrey to get the UAD lookup for the name and address of the account holder. This was a blueyonder dialup account and these are notoriously difficult to trace.
One fine February morning of 2001 Graham logged on to the chat and decided he had too many /superusers/ and he could not remember who had it and who hadn’t! so he did a /grantall –superuser/ which removed EVERY superuser on the chat including himself, and realising the chat script took over 3 hours to complete this command (we’re talking about accessing over 3Million usernames here!!) he was at first unaware what he had done. He had effectively deleted himself of his own superuser access leaving him unable to get it back.

Wondering why the /grantall/ command seemed to be doing nothing he entered /grantall banposter/, and as the hours passed, users were discovering they have the /banposter/ command and many did not know how it was used. Others experimented and set about accidentally banning other users. Graham contacted Ki OK and she contacted some of her so-called ‘hacker’ friends to try and resolve the problem and recover his Superuser access so he could reverse his /grantall/ commands. It is not known whether Ki Ok was aware that Graham and Phloody et-al were the same person.
While this was going on Graham decided a new rule that names having CAPS in them were not allowed and were deleted on sight, he rampaged through the rooms, like a gang of thieves steaming through train carriages robbing the passengers, and deleted any CAPS name he could find, while everyone else was literally banning each other with their new /banposter/ command. He would use a name with /invisible on/ and use the /showuser/ to obtain the password and change it using /chpw/ thereby logging the CAPS name user from the chat.

News reached InfoSpace and they promptly turned off the server, tried rebooting it several times but al this was all to no avail. An executive decision was made to finally close the chat there, and due to the floods of emails they were receiving the closure became permanent. They had considered hiring a new temp programmer to correct the database and restore the chat but found this option too costly for the financial return the chat was yielding at the time.

There were many other snippets of information Graham revealed during this conversation, including being the one who posed as PKchatDaemon and messaging users with /chpw accessusers/ and luring users to change their passwords, he would then log in to their name using the password: accessusers and steal it.

He also admitted that he used the names PatrickC and T.AIPEI /st1:City> (unknown to their owners, and with /invisible on/) to issue the /grantall/ commands. He also used chat programmer Kevin’s name ‘Tester’ and password: 4and4is8. On these occasions he has access to the /showpriv/ command which revealed passwords. Others who unofficially received moderator access were Missy and aGent_Lman, and he admitted logging in to their names while they would repeatedly ban the pedo flooder (himself) and giggle at them as he created new names on cue while logged into the moderators names in a different browser. He commented on how aGent_Lman would list all users in the room and ban using his user ID number. He often got his kicks by logging into an online moderator name and making them speak into the room as if the moderator had said it thelselves, and spontaneously banning a moderator and then unbanning them using /banquietly/ making it appear to be a bug in the chat.

Graham rationalised his revelations to me as he considered what couldn’t be told can now and it was ‘water passing under the bridge’

After the closure of the chat, I contacted InfoSpace’s London office based in Woking Surrey who then contacted their colleagues in Bellevue WA and made some interesting finds, including the name of the original chat programmer who built the chat rooms for InfoSpace - Keven (as in K for KChat Kevin). They also revealed that some agency programmers had worked on some upgrades including a swearword and a CAPS filter, a repeated-line flood filter as well as allowing iconic words (InfoSpace = a 32x32 icon in the chat). The periodic crashing of the chat with the loss of all newly created names was purely due to the server hard drive running out of disc space to hold all the names, and UNIX being what it is would truncate the database file after it has rebooted and therefore delete all new names that fall after the point the truncation was made.

There is probably a lot more to this, but unfortunately it was only recently that I finally deleted the InfoSpace file believing it would no longer be needed. I am sure much more could be revealed if I had the privilege of reading it again. The above is largely from memory and should be treated as a rough guide to the events to the fall of the chat. Several years ago, I made the file available to PJ, aka Info’s Flirty Fish – et-al, believing the information was no longer needed and its possible he may still hold a copy.

My first application to this MSN group had been declined, if I had not made a second application, the above would never have been known to anyone other then myself, and probably would have faded into the annals of InfoSpace history as unsaid.

I came here to tell you all this because I learned I got the blame for the fall of InfoSpace and I can confirm I was not party to it, nor was I ever given any moderator privileges. I have nothing to lose either way, but I considered it fair that ex Info Roomies should know what happened behind the scenes before it is forgotten forever.

OK so here is my response......yes you can ask whats up LOL email me!

Wow
I get a link from Precious about me and Graham being mentioned LOL in some plot to take over info!!!!
I have been reading through these and I think Tai said it best "I appreciate that you want to try to set the record straight with your version of what happened but I think it only fair that before you go and mention peoples names and surmise their involvement in things you should check with all the parties named to find out the facts from every side.God knows people on here dont always tell the truth and its really not fair to have someones name brought up in something when they have no idea why or whats even being said about them."
I think it only fair that I say for one that NO I did not have any sort of super human access or whatever. I was never given access to anything. I talked to phloody yes. He told me he knew who was flooding about Grahams kids and was going to give me the info so that Sarah, I and Graham could prosecute. Well come to find out it was just someone Sarah had met once from chat and he was pissed off with her for God knows what reason so he flooded about her kids. Plain and simple. He also gave her the passwords when they were friends to me and hackers names so she hacked em pure and simple. LOL What is the point of it anyway. My God its been years ago. Graham and Missy's short lived chat LOL was short lived due to people cooming in and trying to do what they did in info. We got SICK OF IT plain and simple and sick of lies and people that tell and told them. Its sad....very sad when you have to lie and pretend to make friends. Some people feel they need to do it. Why? I don't know. I could never figure it out. Graham and I responsible for the downfall of chat???? LMAO Well I know I made a lot of noise due to differences of opinion with one so called female who wanted to "Cut my baby out of my stomache" but thats about it. Looking back on it now if I would have been smart I would have walked away at that point. BUT NO I wanted to make my point. Well were all older and wiser now, and Graham and I are still together and have 2 children now. So it made no difference in our life for it to be shut down. It made no difference in any of your lives for it to be shut down. You all still talk to each other and your all still "friends". I dont even remember you Jason31. I remember PJ LOLOLOL He had links to "Sarah" too. So ya'll had your fun and made your marks and your points on info and the people in it. Do us all a favor and move on! I know we have, and thank God for it! Info was a great place. I can't knock it because I met my soulmate there! *S* It needed to go though. Too many people who knew each other and hated each other and were out to hurt each other. Just be happy you don't know them personaly. Some of us have to live with knowing people from there all the time LOL
Anyway I hope life treats all of you well, and I wish you all the best in life. I found what I was looking for in Hacker and now have 2 beautiful girls with him. Thats all that matters in my eyes. The happiness we found and the fact that were not all fighting anymore in info. LOL
